That Dreaded R-word…Police or Teach?

Comedy Central seems like an odd choice for someone like Tim Shriver, Chairman, Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of the Special Olympics, to talk about the  ”r-word”…or is it?

With over a million viewers, Shriver with Colbert took a bold step to address a population of people where the “r-word” is no doubt used. As you would expect with Stephen Colbert, the conversation was light and amid laughter, Shriver cleverly drove his, “People First” language home by poking fun at Colbert and without coming off as authoritative. No doubt discussing the r-word during the show in a comedic, quick-witted environment somehow diffuses the power that the word holds and teaches us to be aware. Policing people with the expectation of erasing the word’s existence seems to raise emotions, bearing weight to its darker side. Shriver states, “I don’t want to be a cop, I want to be a teacher” and asks for social awareness for a “forgotten population of people.” Shriver makes an appearance on yet another controversial program on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, tonight at 10 pm.

The A-MAZE-ment: TwentyWonder’s Maze of Facts Delights Visitors at LA’s Coolest Charity Event

What was the most memorable attraction at the first TwentyWonder? Joel Hodgson’s Cinematic Titanic? Sock-E-Okee? Original stuff by the Funny or Die folks? The free amulet?

For many, it was something called “The A-MAZE-ment”, a huge, walk-through labyrinth that visitors could physically enter, and quite literally get lost in. And it was more. Within The A-MAZE-ment’s colorful, sculptural walls were posted cool, interesting facts about Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome).

As the “A-MAZE-ment” shows, learning can indeed be fun, even for adults. This popular attraction, built by professional set designers, is a shining example of how DSALA and TwentyWonder calls upon the varied talents of the entertainment industry to not only attract visitors, but to promote community awareness and understanding of a truly great cause.

At DSALA, we’re always creating fresh, exciting ways to get the message out. Prepare to be dazzled at the variety, wonder and enriching “A-MAZE-ment” of our next TwentyWonder event, coming this July.

And if that weren’t enough, you’ll get a free amulet!

CHRIS ERSKINE / FAN OF THE HOUSE

Anyone who’s ever witnessed a Lakers game or an Ultimate Fighting Championship would vouch for the comic book excesses of today’s athletic endeavors. Probably began with Babe Ruth. And devolved into Sad Ochocinco.

But never mind that right now, for we have found something purer, perhaps, near downtown, at a banked-track roller derby league known as L.A. Derby Dolls. Once, sometimes twice a month, some 2,000 people turn out to watch these tough puppies fly around the rink in unstaged athletic competition that is twice as ornery as any hockey game. You think the NFL bleeds violence? Ladies and gentledudes, meet the Derby Dolls…READ ARTICLE

Time’s TECHLAND

Years back, if you were a member of the Los Angeles comedy-nerd-art-dork-hip-oisie, you would be lucky to receive an invitation to SUPERBALL.  SuperBall was the brainchild of Mystery Science Theater 3000′s Joel Hodgson and his brother Jim, and it was always the party of the summer, if not the autumn as well.  Located deep in the deepest darkest San Fernando Valley, the massive party was a “celebration of 21st Century creativity” where you would experience giant telescopes, eight living versions of Dr. Evan Croix, The Tiki-Tee Surf Rod, the original stop-motion metal skeleton from the 1933 King Kong model, and an all-too-whimsical pot luck dinner.  You would run into the Flight of the Conchords guys, Will Wright, Paul Reubens, an Atomic Reaction Simulator, and that cute PA you hooked up from the Mr. Show days whose name you don’t remember.  Plus, when you’d leave they’d give you a really cool ring.  I only have three rings, but there’s eight of them out there.

Now SuperBall has been re-invented, re-imagined, and re-born as TWENTYWONDER…READ ARTICLE
